Scleroderma Warrior

The Gift of an Illness

In sickness and in health, Esthela’s heart, mind, and soul continue to be great partners. Amid sickness, they have learned about mortality and terminality. The struggles of her own health have taught her to better take care of herself. There will be no cure, just healing, and in that, she is an expert. A life dedicated to bringing awareness to a rare disease called Systemic Sclerosis, or more commonly known as Scleroderma, is an honored life.

Twenty-six years ago, Esthela unwrapped one last gift of life which came wrapped in superior materials and with overnight delivery. Without notification, it was simply placed at the doorstep of her body. Her gift and the gift of approximately 300,000 Americans may be individually different in nature, yet all unnatural. They have differences and similarities that can be ironic and comforting. This gift requires vulnerability and intimacy with oneself first before anything or anybody else, helping lead a life of serenity, which is peace in action.

Esthela’s Journey
