A Bittersweet and Heartfelt Project
Isidro Núñez Ramirez, Esthela’s father, enlisted in the Bracero Program in the late ’50s, stationing in Pecos, TX, after an intense and required processing at the Rio Vista Farm.Although the stories Isidro told during his lifetime were limited, Esthela’s love for her father allowed his heart to break open and share his experiences with her. In Seven Stories for My Father: Letters of Love and Legacy, Esthela recounts Isidro’s experience as a Bracero.In her writing, she describes this difficult era and controversial work program to bring awareness to all the men who left everything behind and only carried their faith to a foreign and distant place full of uncertainty.
In 2023, the Greeley History Museum, in partnership with Aims Community College, invited Esthela Núñez Franco to participate in a project called “Bittersweet Harvest: Carrying the Family Legacy.”This opportunity displayed Esthela’s deepest and most vulnerable part of her heart: Her love for her father.
This project allowed family members to share the personal stories of family members who were Braceros anywhere in the country. Esthela did not speak for her father, she simply grounded herself and shared the stories her father told from a point of view of love versus ethnicity. After all, the sacrifices and suffering Isidro may have endured during his work as a Bracero were done in the name of love and seeking the American Dream for himself and, most importantly, for his family.
The Rio Vista Farm in Socorro, Texas is now considered among one of the most endangered historic places. During the last year of Isidro’s life, Esthela had the opportunity to visit the Rio Vista Farm and bring awareness to the importance of preserving history. Seventy years later and for the last time, Isidro visited this place through many photographs and videos bringing tears to his eyes and allowing for a heartfelt farewell.
